OSUN TUITION INCREMENTS STUDENT LEADERS MEET FOR WAY FORWARD

In order to find  a way forward in attackling the issue of increament in tuition fees of tertiary institutions in osun state , the Senate of NANS/JCC Osun Axis met at State College of Education Ila to discuss and resolute on various burning issues as affecting the axis.

The meeting was well attended and witness a robust debate on the various issues raised which are:

STATE OF CAMPUSES

The senate frowned at the indiscriminate hike in the tuition fees by the management of the Osun State University acting on the instruction of the Government of the State of Osun as well as the move to also satanically increase all payable fees in the other state owned tertiary institutions. The meeting viewed it as a deliberate attempt to take education away from the reach of the poor and the ordinary citizens.

In the same vein, the wave of intimidation and attempts to polarize or paralyze independent unionism across the campuses through suspension, expulsion of students’ leaders as well as proscription of students’ unionism was strongly condemned and described as unacceptable.

The case of Suspension in Uniosun and OAU Ife, proscription of Students Unionism in OAU, refusal to allow the conduct of students’ elections in Ospoly Iree and Uniosun readily comes to mind.

The senate describe these acts as barbaric, satanic and undemocratic, it reminds us of our not too long past of militarily dictatorship. The various school authorities must be reminded that we have since departed that era and are now in a democracy where rules must be obeyed in all our dealings.

The problem associated with understaffing in the various states owned institutions were also discussed; the meeting described the situation as a clog in the wheel of academic progress of the state and one that calls for immediate action.

Moreover, the meeting called on the state government to do more in the area of funding through the 2018 budget to meet the 26% UNESCO standard amongst many other issues.

STATE OF THE  AXIS 

The meeting deliberately on the nonchalant and incoherent attitude of the Axis General Secretary Comr. Mainframe among many other things and resolved that he must behave and sit up henceforth.

The senate gave him a period of grace beginning with his participation in the activities of the Axis starting from the School fess increment struggle commencing next week. 

ZONAL CONVENTION

Without prejudice to the efforts of the zonal leadership, the senate feels that the leadership of the Zone has stayed too long in office and calls for immediate action to reconvene the convention to elect new set of leaders, the meeting enjoin the JCC Chair to meet with other Axis chairmen to proffer a way forward from the zonal logjam.

NANS NATIONAL

The meeting resolved to attend the coming National pre-convention coming up in Nassarawa State on the 25th of this month. Member unions are to commence preparation.

RESOLUTIONS

The meeting resoluted on the following issues: 

1. That the authority of Osun State University should totally reverse the satanic school fees increment immediately

2. That the authorities of the state polytechnic Iree, State College of Technology Esa-Oke, State College of Education Ilesha and the State College of Education Ila Orangun should immediately reverse the plan hike in all payable fees in their various schools.

3. That the authority of Osun State College of Health Technology and the Ministry of Health  State of Osun reverse all payable fees in the institutions.

4. That the authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University Ife and that of the Osun State University should with immediate alacrity put a stop to all form of victimization and harassment of students’ leaders by lifting the suspension on the suspended students of their respective schools.

5. That all ban on students unionism be lifted immediately in OAU Ife, and that credible students elections be conducted in Osun State University and Ospoly Iree immediately.

6. We call on the Government of the State of Osun to increase budgetary allocation to education up to 26% as recommended by UNESCO in the 2018 budget.

7. We call for the immediate recruitment of staff to all the state owned institution to bridge the gap understaffing has inflicted on our educational system.

Government of the State of Osun, its agents (various schools managements) and the authority of Obafemi Awolowo University are hereby given till the 20thh of November to meet our demands, failure of which we shall employ all constitutional permitted tactics to drive home our demands.  

The senate of Osun NANS/JCC agrees to address the press on Thursday 9th 

November 2017 to publicize these demands.
