ANUNSA inaugurates pilot teen wing in Osun By Mustapha Aleem
The All-Nigeria United Nations Students' And Youth Association, has launched the first teen wing of the association in Osun State.
The National Executive President of ANUNSA, Ambassador Moye Ajala-Davies, said the pilot edition would see students engage in some serious decision making activity, through the Model United Nations, which would trigger a sense of diplomatic responsibility in the young ones.
He stated this at a United Nations 71st Anniversary and The Launch of ANUNSA Teens at the Osun State University, Osogbo on Monday.
According to Davies, We want to test the level of the teen wing workability in Nigeria by starting with Osun State. I realize we only have representative from higher institutions alone and it is pivotal we grow in them, the habit before getting to that level.
"With the Demo United Nations, which would be coming up in December, each student would be given a responsibility of representing a county. Such student would read everything about the country whereupon deliberations on behalf of the country would be made in Abuja and the resolution of that meeting will be forwarded to the UN General Assembly for adoption. With that, student's horizon would be broadened by allowing them to think and read wider beyond their syllabus. This is an effort to give birth to a pool of young diplomatic Nigerians."
The Deputy Governor of Osun state, Titi Laoye-Tomori, promised to support the success and progress of the initiative in the state, while lauding the brain behind the idea.
The Deputy Governor, who was represented by Mr Afolabi, bemoaned the dying state of History as a subject in schools' curriculum, saying the society would not have found itself in the mess it is going through today, if the subject was encouraged in schools at all level.
He said students, who no longer fancied the subject would definitely find it uneasy to know what led to the collapse of the League of Nations, the first and Second World War and the likes. He urged stakeholders in the education sector to ensure the resuscitation of the subject in school curricula as measure for preventing future wars.
Also, the Vice Chancellor of the Redeemers University, Prof Zebb Debo, lauded the initiative, saying it would go a long way in assisting the country's limping education sector.
